Many spiritual thought leaders have impacted people in a positive way. My absolute favorite spiritual thought leader is Iyanla Vanzant. Her insight is beyond this world. She can smell the bullshit approaching a mile away. I love that about her. In one of her SuperSoul Sunday discussions with Oprah Winfrey, she talks about how putting others before yourself is “Not Good.”
In the following clip, Vanzant responds to people’s perception of being the strong one. She states that sacrificing your well being for others is not a good thing. It’s retrospect, this throught process is counterproductive and selfish. Vanzant states that putting yourself first is not selfish; it’s self full. She acknowledges that our cup must be full before we can truly be of service to others.
This idea is similar to airline safety precations. Put your oxygen mask on before helping to save others. What can you truly do for others while your in a state of deprivation, except make the situation worst? This was a lightbulb moment for me.
Vanzant on Putting Others Before Yourself:
That last part though? How many of you have made someone into a theif without them knowing? I know I have been guilty of doing this a few times, unknowingly of course.
It’s important for us to understand how interconnected we are as human beings. What you do impacts not only you but others. That’s a heavy thought, and a true statement. I’m definitely reconsidering the meaning behind the famous biblical quote, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” I haven’t been treating myself too well, which means that maltreatment spills over into the lives of the people around me.
Q: If you’re not treating myself well, how do you know that you’re treating others well?Any thoughts? I’m interested to know your opionion. Comment below.
